PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning type printing apparatus which makes printing on a recording medium having characters and patterns printed thereupon without overlapping characters and patterns on them, and adjusts character sizes as required. SOLUTION: In an automatic adjustment mode (S1:Yes), the maximum character size to be accommodated in the minimum height in the sub-scanning direction of the blank section of the image is set (S5, S6) with only scanning of the images on the printing medium (S3), and printing dot data is generated based on the maximum character size (S7). Thereby, printing in a desired character string or the like is made in a balanced size to be accommodated in the blank section. Printing is also made based on the character size appointed by a character size selection switch (S8), which enables the adjustment of the character size as required. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
