PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp having a high brightness and long life, and an electrode for this lamp. SOLUTION: The electrode is constituted of a base material and a covered layer to cover the base material surface. By forming the base material by one kind selected from nickel, a nickel alloy, iron, and an iron alloy, a shape such as a cup form can be manufactured easily. The covering layer is equipped with a surface layer composed of tungsten or molybdenum and a joining layer existing between the base material and the surface layer composed of a zinc alloy. Tungsten and molybdenum are hard to be sputtered comparing with nickel and iron, and have a small work function and a high melting point. By interposing the joining layer, the surface layer and the base material can be adhered sufficiently. The cold-cathode fluorescent lamp equipped with such an electrode has the high brightness and the long life since the reduction in brightness and consumption of the electrode or the like can be reduced.
