PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a constant mesh type starter capable of improving the ease of installation on an engine. SOLUTION: A housing 17 is provided with a spigot joint part 17b formed on a starter mounting wall 36 on an engine side and fitted in a mounting hole 36a, and a nose part 17c projecting forward from the spigot joint part 17c. A step-less boundary part is provided at least in a part of circumference direction between the nose part 17c and the spigot joint part 17b. An outer circumference surface of the nose part 17c and outer circumference surface of the spigot joint part 17b are connected without a step at least in a part of circumference direction. Consequently, the spigot joint part 17b can be smoothly fitted in the engine side mounting hole 36a by using the nose part 17c as a guide after meshing the pinion gear 6 and the ring gear 28 when the starter is assembled on the engine.
