PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To back up image data of a camera not compatible with a function of an external storage device. SOLUTION: The external storage device comprises decision means 201 for deciding whether a connected camera is a camera (compatible camera) compatible with the external storage device or a camera (non-compatible camera); specifying means 201 for specifying a new image file not stored in storage means 202 from among image files in the connected camera, by a first algorithm when the connected camera is determined to be a compatible one, or by a second algorithm different from the first algorithm when the same is determined to be a non-compatible one; and the storage means 202 for storing a specified image file.
