SURFACE LIGHT SOURCE AND BACKLIGHT UNIT HAVING THE SAME

A surface light source and a backlight unit having the same are provided to improve brightness of the light source by preventing a discharge space from being divided by a barrier rib. A surface light source includes a planar first substrate(210), a planar second substrate(220), at least one surface electrode units(250,260), and at least one bar-type spacer(235). The planar second substrate is opposed to the first substrate and forms an inner discharge space with the first substrate. The surface electrode units are formed on an outer surface of at least one of the first and second substrates and apply a discharge voltage on the discharge space. The bar-type spacer divides the discharge space into at least two spaces. The spacer is integrated with the first and second substrates.
