An image forming apparatus and a method for controlling the operation of the image forming apparatus are provided to check whether input print data is mono data or color data, and control a fixing temperature according a print type, thereby controlling a fixing unit at a proper temperature necessary for fixing. A fixing unit(170) includes a heating roller(173) and a pressure roller(171). A data input unit(210) receives print data. A control unit(200) controls the fixing temperature of the fixing unit according to a kind of the print data inputted to the data input unit. The control unit classifies the input print data into mono data or color data, and controls the fixing temperature of the fixing unit so that the mono data can be fixed at a lower temperature than that at which the color data is fixed.
