In rotary cutter drum apparatus for cutting travelling webs transversely in which the peripheral speed of the cutter is adjustable so as to be equal to the speed of the web at the moment of cutting, the cutter drum is formed by a non-uniformly rotating light hollow cylinder carrying a cutter and a solid or stable core not participating in the non-uniform movement of the hollow cylinder. In the form shown, the cutter drums 9, 13 are driven non-uniformly from a driving gear-wheel 7 by means of a non- uniform drive 8 and gear-wheels 11, 12, and the cores 15, 16 are driven at a uniform speed from the web feeding rollers 2 by means of bevel gears 17, 18 and gear-wheels 19, 20. Each hollow cylinder may be mounted eccentrically relatively to its core. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the cores are supported so as to be stationary. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the cores are supported so as to be freely rotatable. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), each core is used as a balancing mass and is so driven non-uniformly as to be retarded upon acceleration of the hollow cylinder and vice versa. More than one cutter may be provided on each drum.</p> |
