A plasma display panel and a driving method thereof are provided to improve a dark contrast by decreasing light emitting brightness of the PDP(Plasma Display Panel) by generating a weak reset discharge. A plasma display panel includes a pair of substrates(10,14), plural row electrode pairs(X,Y), plural column electrodes, and a fluorescent layer(17). The row electrode pairs are arranged on one of the substrates. The column electrodes are arranged on the other substrate and elongated in a direction to cross the row electrode pairs. The row and column electrodes define unit light emitting regions at intersections thereof. Discharge gas is filled in a discharge space. The fluorescent layer is arranged at the unit light emitting regions between the column and row electrodes. A secondary electron emission material is included in the fluorescent layer. The secondary electron emission material contains magnesium oxide with a cathode luminescence property having a peak in a wavelength region between 200 and 300 nanometers, when the secondary electron emission material is agitated by an electron line.
