A system for determining a location of an orthopaedic medical device includes a controller and an array of antennae. The array of antennae includes a number of coplanar antennae and one or more additional antennae positioned non-coplanar relative to the coplanar antennae. The coplanar and non-coplanar antennae may be directional antennae. The orthopaedic medical device includes a wireless transmitter circuit configured to transmit a serial number of the device on a predetermined carrier frequency. The orthopaedic medical device may be coupled to a bone of the patient, an orthopaedic implant, or an orthopaedic surgical tool. The controller is electrically coupled to the array of antennae and configured to determine a location of the orthopaedic medical device based on output signals received from the antennae in response to the modulated wireless signal. |
