Method of modulating the performance of a heat engine based on estimating the piston temperature

The method involves continuously evaluating a temperature (Tp) of a piston of a heat engine e.g. motor vehicle engine, from data that is obtained from sensors and representing input and output thermal fluxes of the engine. An engine supply parameter e.g. injected fuel flow, is modified, when the temperature reaches a threshold value (T1) corresponding to a nibbling and/or melting risk of the piston and exceeds another threshold value (T2) during a predetermined time interval. The latter threshold value above the interval corresponds to a risk of cracking of the piston.
