Mixed liquor is air-lifted by bubbles B, Fig. 2, from an aerating chamber A through a conduit 4 to a decanting chamber D where it separates into clear liquid C and sludge M. Some sludge passes through orifices 32 in a stepped wall 19 and recycles along a passage 6 to the aerating chamber A. In Fig. 4 one baffle 10 forming one side of the conduit 4 is dispensed with, a pipe taking the place of the conduit 4. Also the direction of inclination of the passage 6 is reversed and the sludge flows gravitationally down the wall 19. Fig. 3 (not shown) has the baffle arrangement of Fig. 2 but the wall and passage arrangement of Fig. 4.</p> |
