A method and an apparatus for providing an electronic key in a portable terminal are provided to reduce hacking possibility by using a combination of a key and a frequency. An identification process is performed to identify an assigned frequency from an input key of a user when an event is generated to release a locking unit(301-317). A transmission process is performed to oscillate the identified frequency and to transmit the oscillated frequency to the corresponding locking unit(319). The assigned frequency is assigned and changed by a user. The identification process includes a process for inspecting whether a frequency is assigned to each key when the event is generated to release the locking device. The identification process includes a process for assigning the frequency to each key by displaying a window on a display unit to assign the frequency when the frequency is not assigned to the key.
