A data input and output device is provided to perform equalizing of a local data line selectively in correspondence to operation mode of a semiconductor memory device. A write driver(120) drives a local data line to store data inputted from the outside into a cell array. A bit line sense amplifier(110) amplifies data loaded on the local data line and then transmits the amplified data to the cell array, and amplifies the data loaded on a bit line by being transmitted from the cell array and then transmits the amplified data to the local data line. A local input/output sense amplifier(130) amplifies the data outputted from the bit line sense amplifier and then transmits the amplified data to the outside. A local data line equalizer(140) is connected to the local data line, and equalizes and precharges the local data line selectively by a local input/output selection signal generated in response to operation mode.
