<p>Aqueous vinyl polymer emulsions are stabilized against coagulation in the presence of electrolytes by adding to said emulsions non-emulsifying nonionic agents which are condensation products of 5 to 35 mols. of ethylene oxide with one mol. of an aromatic hydroxy compound which is a naphthols or a xylenol. The xylenols are defined as phenols bearing only two methyl groups on the nucleus. The term vinyl polymers includes (a) homopolymers of compounds containing the CH2=C= radical, e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, styrene, unsubstituted and substituted acrylic acid and derivatives thereof, e.g. amides, nitriles and esters with monovalent alcohols and (b) copolymers obtained from at least two vinyl monomers, e.g. vinyl acetatestyrene, vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride and ethyl acrylate styrene copolymers. The ethylene oxide condensates are used in amounts of 0.25 to 10 gm. per 100 gm. of emulsion. The emulsion may also contain at least one anionic emulsifier, e.g. ethylene oxide nonyl phenol condensates, alkali metal alkyl sulphates and alkali metal alkyl-aryl sulphonates. The examples describe the stabilization of ethyl polyacrylate and polystyrene and copolymers of ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate and styrene with condensates of betanaphthol with 11 or 21 moles of ethylene oxide and condensates of xylenol with 15 moles of ethylene oxide. The Specification also refers to to condensation products of 25 moles of ethylene oxide and 1 mol. of C16-C18 fatty alcohols.</p> |
