An apparatus and a method for switching a watching mode in a portable terminal having a digital broadcasting receiver are provided to mount a sensor to a digital broadcasting receiver antenna and sense a state of the digital broadcasting receiver antenna through the sensor, thereby controlling the operation mode of the digital broadcasting receiver. A digital broadcasting receiver(100) processes a digital broadcasting signal received through an antenna(120). A sensor(200) senses the on/off state of the antenna. A control unit(500) activates the digital broadcasting receiver and switches a current mode into a digital broadcasting receiving mode if the on state of the antenna is sensed from the sensor. A display unit(250) and a speaker(300) reproduce a video and an audio transmitted from the digital broadcasting receiver.
