An apparatus and a method for searching for a cell in a portable terminal are provided to prevent a waste of resources by adding RAT(Radio Access Technology) information to broadcast messages so as to remove the process of searching for a 3G mobile communication service where only a 2G mobile communication service exists. A portable terminal for executing cell searching comprises a receiving part, a broadcast message deciphering part(104), and an MPU(Micro-Processor Unit)(100). The receiving part receives a broadcast message broadcasted from a network. The broadcast message deciphering part(104) deciphers the received broadcast message according to the control of the MPU(100), acquires RAT information, and provides the acquired RAT information to the MPU(100). The MPU issues an order to search for a communication service depending on the RAT information provided from the broadcast message deciphering part.
