An air conditioner is provided to carry out defrosting operation simultaneously with heating operation without stopping the heating operation by dividing an outdoor heat exchanger into two parts connected with each other in parallel and carrying out the defrosting operation alternately, thereby keeping the pleasant room condition and reducing the defrosting time. An air conditioner includes an outdoor heat exchanger(73) having a refrigerant circuit divided into two parts of upper and lower heat exchange parts(731,732), wherein the upper one is larger than the lower one. A controller opens and closes a main circuit opening/closing element(713a,713b) and a bypass opening/closing valve(715a,715b) oppositely when defrosting is initiated in the middle of heating operation in a defrosting/heating mode. In this case, the upper heat exchange part is defrosted while the lower one is in the heating operation and then the lower heat exchanger part is defrosted while the upper one is in the heating operation. After the defrosting/heating mode is finished, the air conditioner is returned to a heating mode.
