<p>Uranium and uranium alloys are recovered by a process involving the reduction of compounds of uranium with a reducing substance consisting of lithium, lithium-sodium alloy, lithium-potassium alloy or lithium-sodium-potassium alloy which reducing substance may also contain a proportion of calcium and/or magnesium, the reduction being carried out substantially in the absence of reactive gases and at a temperature above the fusion temperature of the reducing substance. The process is applicable to the reduction of uranium oxides and oxygen-containing compounds in which the uranium is in the acid radical, and is preferably carried out in the presence of an inert gas such as argon. The oxide of the reducing substance and excess reducing substance are leached out with water, the resulting solution of lithium hydroxide is neutralized with hydrochloric acid to a pH of about p 6, evaporated to dryness and lithium metal separated from the chloride residue, e.g. by electrolysis.
