A method for inserting and detecting a digital reversible watermark based on histogram modification and an original image restoring method are provided to perform faster and exact extraction when performing insertion and detection, remove the necessity to transmit additional information by using a location map, and improve invisibility of an image signal inserted with a watermark. A reversible watermark method comprises the following steps of: calculating a histogram value of an image; shifting a histogram in order to generate a watermark insertion space by using information about a pixel having a specific value in the histogram of the image; generating a location map in order to store a location coordinate value of the specific pixel when shifting the histogram of the image; generating a digital watermark based on a secrete key; generating payload by integrating the location map and the digital watermark into one bit string; and inserting the payload, integrated into one bit string, into the watermark insertion space of the image.
