A display device, a host device, and a power saving method for the display device are provided to reduce power unnecessary consumed when HDCP(High-bandwidth Digital Contents Protection) key authentication is failed in a controller. A display device(20) includes a power supply unit(24), a connector(21) connecting to a host device(10), a display part(23), and a controller(22). The controller receives an authentication value for preventing digital data copy from the host device through the connector, transmits a return value to the host device in response to the received authentication value, and controls a power saving mode by cutting off the power of the power supply unit when an authentication failure message is received from the host device through a DDC(Display Data Channel). The display part displays a message informing a user that the display device enters the power saving mode owing to authentication failure when the authentication failure message is received. The host device includes a digital data generator(11), a connecting unit(12) and a controlling unit(13). The controlling unit of the host device controls the performance of authentication process for transmitting a normal digital data signal to the display part through a connecting unit, and controls the digital data generator according to the result from the performance.
