A navigation device with a function for sensing a distance with vehicles and a method for operating the same are provided to generate a warning message by detecting the distance with vehicles in bad weather. A navigation device includes a map data DB(Data Base)(130), a GPS(Global Positioning System) receiver(120), a warning data DB(140), a distance detector(110), a controller(150), a display unit(180), and an audio output unit(160). The map data DB stores map data. The GPS receiver receives position data from GPS satellites. The warning data DB stores warning data including warning guide information. The distance detector detects distance with vehicles and outputs a detected signal. The controller calculates current position, generates map matching data and distance display data, and generates a warning generation signal according to the possibility of collision with a vehicle ahead. The display unit displays the distance display data and distance with vehicles, and a map screen based on the map matching data. The audio output unit outputs a warning guide audio sound through a speaker(170). |
