APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR PROCESSING DIGITAL KOREAN SUBTITLE

An apparatus and a method for processing Korean subtitles are provided to prevent the occurrence of a phenomenon that a subtitle is shown in a broken state or only a portion of characters is seen, by moving a subtitle to left or right as long as the size of a full character if a horizontal scroll command language is inputted. A demultiplexer(120) separates an inputted TS(Transport Stream) into a video signal and a subtitle signal. If a current subtitle mode is a Korean subtitle mode, a subtitle decoder(134) processes the separated subtitle signal as a full character or a half-character in consideration of a subtitle display direction. A video decoder(132) decodes the separated video signal. A video processing unit(136) combines the subtitle signal processed by the subtitle decoder(134) and the video signal decoded by the video decoder(132) and outputs it as a signal which can be displayed. If the current subtitle mode is the Korean subtitle mode and the subtitle display direction is one of an upward direction and a downward direction, the subtitle decoder(134) handles all the subtitles included in the subtitle signal as full characters and processes a single subtitle to be displayed at two columns.
