A method and an apparatus for adjusting backlight in a display device are provided to output a backlight control signal and to drive backlights through a backlight adjustment part for adjusting backlight brightness used for a display panel. A backlight adjustment circuit(100) comprises a backlight brightness selecting block(110), an image processing block(120), and a backlight adjustment part(130). The backlight brightness selecting block selects backlight brightness information based on the brightness of measured light. The image processing block calculates image processing gain for input image information. The backlight adjustment part adjusts backlight brightness according to the backlight brightness information and image processing gain. The backlight brightness selecting block includes a surrounding light measuring part(210), and a backlight brightness selecting part(220). The image processing block includes multiple image processing parts(240-1~240-N), an image processing selecting part(230), and an image processing image calculating part(250). The backlight adjustment part includes a backlight control signal generating part(132), and a backlight driver(134).
