The method comprises the following steps: (A) generating (2) a first signal (S1) with a parameter value representing the number of axle (4) revolutions in the vehicle engine; (B) converting this value with the aid of a conversion factor into a second signal (S2) for sending to a tachograph (8), the value of the second signal representing the distance travelled by the vehicle and needing to be recorded by the tachograph; and (C) calibrating the conversion factor, which involves determining the distance travelled by the vehicle, determining the first signal parameter over this distance and calibrating the conversion factor on the basis of these two values. The distance is determined using a GPS system (10).
