The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for classifying occupants in a transportation means, in particular a motor vehicle, in which method the following steps are carried out: sensor data is detected using a sensor means and subjected to evaluation, wherein during the evaluation the detected sensor data is allocated to a first or at least to a second class (C1, C2), wherein the at least one second class (C2) has an associated restraint means for protecting the occupants in the event of an accident. A large number of successive first signal values of a first signal (S1) are output for further processing, wherein the large number of first signal values corresponds to the first or the at least one second class (C1, C2). A second signal (S2) with a large number of successive second signal values is determined from the large number of first signal values, wherein, for further processing, the second signal (S2) is fed to a control unit for the restraint means for determining a triggering decision, and wherein the large number of second signal values corresponds to the first or to the at least one second class (C1, C2). In order to form the large number of second signal values of the second signal (S2), a previous predetermined condition (A, B) is taken into account, which condition takes into account the time sequence of the first signal values of the first signal (S1). |
