<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a synchronous machine and a method for operating the synchronous machine so as to reduce the fire risk. <P>SOLUTION: The synchronous machine has salient poles that are provided with electrically-connected pole windings. The method is used for monitoring a wind energy plant and the synchronous machine of the wind energy plant. The synchronous machine is provided with a rotor having a plurality of poles respectively provided with at least one pole winding. The pole windings of a plurality of the poles are electrically connected with each other by a first conductor through which an exciting current flows. A monitoring conductor acted upon with a prescribed signal is arranged substantially in parallel with respect to the first conductor. The monitoring conductor is connected with a signal detection device for detecting the signal. When the first conductor is interrupted, the interruption is detected by a signal variation in the monitoring conductor. The signal detection device is connected to a control device.
