When Re(&lambda;) denotes in-plane retardation of the first and second retardation layers at a wavelength &lambda; and Rth(&lambda;) denotes retardation in a thickness direction, Re/Rth(450nm), a ratio of Re to Rth in the first retardation layer at 450nm wavelength, is 0.4 to 0.95 times of Re/Rth(550nm) at the 550nm wavelength and Re/Rth(650nm) at 650nm wavelength is 1.05 to i.93 times of Re/Rth(550nm).
