PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the lift of a pointing device on both surfaces of a transparent structure and an opaque structure. SOLUTION: The pointing device such as an optical mouse is equipped with a top surface lift detection system capable of detecting the lift of the device whether the device is placed on the transparent structure or the opaque structure. The top surface lift detection system utilizes the separate detection of a light beam that reflects off the surface on which the pointing device is placed to detect the lift whether the pointing device is placed on the opaque surface or the transparent surface.
