PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing in high yield the corresponding benzene compound by cyclic trimerization reaction of an alkyne compound, and also producing in high selectivity an asymmetrical multisubstituted benzene compound. SOLUTION: The method for producing the benzene compound of the general formula(2) by trimerization reaction of the alkyne compound of the general formula(1) in the presence of a rhodium halide and a tertiary amine compound is provided. In these formulas(1) and (2), R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each the same or different H, a 1-15C alkyl, (substituted) phenyl, 1-4C alkoxy 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkylcarbonyl, (substituted) benzoyl, 1-4C alkoxycarbonyl or the like.
