PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve an elevator operable without applying large drawing force to a pit 23 of an elevator hoistway 17 and a machine room floor etc. even when rope tension of a main rope 14 in the side opposite to a car 15 is zero. SOLUTION: This elevator device is provided with the car 15 lifting/lowering within the hoistway 17, a turnabout sheave 22 installed within the hoistway 17, a drive device 1 installed in the upper part of the hoistway 17 and the main rope 14 having both ends connected to the car 15 and endlessly arranged via a sheave 3 of the drive device 1 and the turnabout sheave 22. The drive device 1 is driven while a certain longitudinal region of the main rope 14 is pressed from the side direction. Thus, even when rope tension T1 in the car 15 side and rope tension T2 in the car opposite side of the main rope 14 largely vary with each other, operation can be performed without problems.
