PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting element that can broaden the distribution range of outgoing lights, as well as a light source device provided with the same.

SOLUTION: The light emitting element is provided with a sapphire substrate 10 which is formed like a rectangular parallelopiped and of which shortest side in top view has a dimension of 0.3 to 0.6 of its thickness, and a group III nitride compound semiconductor layer 20 that has a light emitting layer stacked on the sapphire substrate 10.
