<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of speedily performing translation processing from a photographed image. <P>SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus is equipped with an imaging device which photographs a subject, a signal processing portion, a buffer memory, a recording portion, a character extracting portion, and a translation processing portion. The signal processing portion generates data of a photographed image based on the output of the imaging device. The buffer memory can temporarily record the data of the photographed image. The recording portion records the data of the photographed image recorded in the buffer memory into a nonvolatile memory. The character extracting portion reads from the buffer memory, the data of the photographed image output from the signal processing portion, and extracts characters included in the photographed image before the data of the photographed image are discarded without being recorded into the nonvolatile memory.
