An air conditioner includes an outdoor unit, an indoor unit and a plurality of communication pipes. The outdoor unit including has a gas close valve, a compressor driven by a compressor motor controlled by an inverter, an outdoor heat exchanger, an electrically powered expansion valve, and a liquid close valve. The an indoor unit has an indoor heat exchanger. The communication pipes interconnect the outdoor unit and the indoor unit. The air conditioner determines, on the basis of compressor power supplied to the compressor motor from the inverter, whether or not a pump down operation is being performed in a state of a refrigeration cycle operation that causes the indoor heat exchanger to function as an evaporator of refrigerant. When the pump down operation is being performed, the air conditioner stops the compressor after a predetermined stop time has elapsed.
