<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a corner-coupling backlight giving an efficient and uniform light distribution. <P>SOLUTION: Various modes of application are provided of the corner-coupling backlight in which one or more LEDs are optically combined at a truncated corner part of a rectangular solid optical waveguide. In one of the modes, a white LED of a high output is mounted on a small reflective cavity, and then, is coupled with a flattened corner part of the optical waveguide. The reflective cavity provides a more uniform distribution of light at various angles to the truncated corner face, and distributes light better over all the volume of the optical waveguide. This creates more uniform illumination of the optical waveguide in a liquid crystal layer. In another mode, the LED is mounted in a small cavity near a corner part of the optical waveguide, and the reflector is mounted on the corner part of the optical waveguide.
