PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a good balance of high speed cruise and acceleration for overtaking with an excellent response. SOLUTION: The controller for the automatic transmission is provided with a first transmission characteristic memory means 21 storing transmission characteristics of all transmission ranges from the lowest transmission range to the highest transmission range, a second transmission characteristic memory means 22 storing characteristics of middle transmission ranges set between the lowest transmission range and the highest transmission range except for at least one range, a transmission characteristic switch means 23 for switching the first and second transmission characteristic means 21, 22 based on a travelling state determined based on a manual operation of a driver or various types of parameters and a target transmission range setting means 24 for setting a final target transmission range based on the switched transmission characteristic memory means.
