PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pharmaceutical composition and an agent that can be used for the treatment of herniated nucleus pulposus characterized by the presence of nucleus pulposus in the spinal epidural space, such as epidurally migrating herniated nucleus pulposis and transligamentous prolapse type herniated nucleus pulposus. SOLUTION: The pharmaceutical composition contains a glycosaminoglycan-degrading enzyme, preferably chondroitinase, more preferably chondroitinase ABC, in an amount effective to dissolve the nucleus pulposus existing in the epidural space, for the treatment of herniated nucleus pulposus where the nucleus pulposus exists in the spinal epidural space, such as epidurally migrating herniated nucleus pulposis and transligamentous prolapse type herniated nucleus pulposus.
