PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a step device allowing a seated person in a wheelchair equipped with the electric lift type step device to comfortably operate the device to descend without such a trouble that the seated person may feel uneasy when the external force in the direction of rearward inclination is applied to the wheelchair by the reactive force from the road surface generated if the descending motion of a step board is restrained when the step board runs on an obstacle such as difference in level on the road surface on the way of descending. SOLUTION: If the external force of at least a certain level is applied to a screw shaft 55 when the step board runs on the obstacle such as the difference in level on the road surface on the way of descending, a driving side member 81 and a driven side member 82 of a joint 80 for connecting the screw shaft to an electric motor 54 are slid to each other in the direction of rotation to block the motor power.
