PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device with a simple configuration which can quickly and surely read data in an embossed area of an optical disk. SOLUTION: For a DVD having a rewritable area in which a groove is formed and an embossed area in which the groove is not formed, the optical disk device comprises a PU head, and a controller for measuring the amplitude of a push-pull tracking error signal generated by calculating the difference of intensities of light receiving elements of the PU head divided in the radial direction of the DVD. The controller carries out the following operations of: (ST1 to ST3) moving the PU head into the rewritable area, and measuring and storing an initial value X of the amplitude of the tracking error signal; (ST4, ST5) moving the PU head by a prescribed amount to the inner periphery of the DVD and measuring the amplitude Y of the tracking error signal; and (ST6) repeating the ST2 when the amplitude Y/X is more than 50%, and stopping the PU head from moving when the amplitude Y/X is not more than 50%.
