PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance sizing effects of a surface sizing agent on paper free of an internal sizing agent. SOLUTION: The cationic surface sizing agent includes amines (A) and a copolymer (B) which is a copolymer obtained by polymerizing (a) 18-40 wt.% of a tertiary amino group-containing monomer with (b) 10-80 wt.% of a 4-18C alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and (c) 0-70 wt.% of styrenes in the presence of a chain transfer agent and carrying out quaternization or without conducting the quaternization. Since the amines (A) such as laurylamine, oleylamine or distearylamine are further contained in the copolymer (B) prepared by reacting the monomer components of specific species in specified contents, the surface sizing agent is efficiently oriented in fiber surfaces of the paper by interaction of the components (A) and (B).
