An apparatus for inputting letters and symbols is provided to enable a user to input characters like in a short message more conveniently by enabling the same syllables or words to be inputted via less strokes such that durability of a keypad can increase. An apparatus for inputting letters and symbols comprises keys(111~122) and a display unit. In a Korean letter input mode, a user pushes the keys once, twice or three times, and then the apparatus inputs consonants or vowels printed on an upper face of each key. For example, if the user inputs the first key(111), the apparatus displays one Korean consonant, '±Ý' on the display unit. If the user inputs the first key twice continuously, the apparatus displays the other Korean consonant, '± ' on the display unit. In case that a key is for inputting a fortis, the user pushes the key to which a consonant corresponds and then pushes the twelfth key(122), namely a switch key where a 'switch' is printed for switching a consonant into a corresponding fortis. In case of inputting a diphthong, the user pushes a key on which a corresponding vowel is printed, and then pushes the twelfth key. In case of inputting frequently used symbols like a period mark and a question mark, the user continuously pushes the tenth key(120) and the eleventh key(121).
