The present invention generally relates to implantable devices for produc ing insulin in diabetic animals. Some embodiments include amphiphilic biomem branes for use in biological applications (e.g., as an alternative and/or su pplemental insulin source). Some embodiments also include live insulin-produ cing cells contained within one or more amphiphilic membranes so as to preve nt or diminish an immuno-response and/or rejection by the host.
