POLYFLUOROALKANE CARBOXYLIC ACID (OR ITS SALT)AND PROOCESS FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

A polyfluoroalkanecarboxylic acid represented by the general formula: CnF 2n+1(CH2CF2)m(CF2CF2)l-1CF2COOM (M: an alkali metal, a NH4 group, H; n: 1 to 6; m: 1 to 4; l: 1 or 2) can be produced by the hydrolysis of a polyfluoroa lkanecarboxylic acid fluoride represented by the general formula: CnF2n+1(CH 2CF2)m(CF2CF2)l-1CF2COF, and a salt thereof can be formed in the form of an alkali metal salt or a NH4 salt. The polyfluoroalkanecarboxylic acid (salt) can act effectively as a surfactant having excellent monomer-emulsifying pro perties and latex-stabilizing properties when used as an emulsifying agent o r a dispersing agent in the polymerization of a fluorinated monomer, or can act effectively as a surfactant capable of increasing the solubility of a mi celle of a fluorinated monomer such as vinylidene fluoride when used as an e mulsifying agent or a dispersing agent in the homopolymerization or copolyme rization of vinylidene fluoride.
