PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the processing load on an external apparatus side in overwriting a file held by the external apparatus overall in a file of the same file name recorded on a recording and reproducing device relating to a file, for example, an MXF file, in which partial overwrite is prohibited. SOLUTION: When the file open request from the external apparatus (a personal computer 3) instructs the overwrite of the file (base file) of the same name recorded in an optical disk D, the recording and reproducing device 2 discriminates whether the Truncate Flag included in the file open request is effective or not (namely, the deletion of the ground file is guaranteed or not), and executes the overwrite processing complying with the file open request only in the effective case. As a result, the external apparatus requires only the write instruction, while conventionally requiring instruction for file write after instructing to delete the base file.
