PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate uncomfortable feeling that an engine brake force rapidly increases on an engine braking request accompanying down-shift while traveling in an automatic transmission D mode. SOLUTION: In S1 to S4, while travelling (a step S1 and a step S4) in a state selecting a second speed by the automatic transmission D mode, an accelerator pedal is released (a step S2), in the case (a step S3) that a first speed engine brake request in a D mode automatic return type manual transmission (DM) mode is issued by a shift paddle operation (output of a manual downshift instruction Pad-) of a driver, corresponding 2→1 downshift is prohibited instead of judgement results of S1, S3, S4 in S7 and mode is switched from the D mode to the DM mode and a friction element for a second speed engine brake is fastened corresponding to the judgement result that a shift paddle operation (a manual downshift instruction Pad-) is performed in S6.
