PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery with excellent safety corresponding to a higher capacity and a higher output with initial heat generation itself restrained. SOLUTION: The nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery includes a battery element 3-1 made by winding around or laminating a cathode 6 and an anode 7 through separators 8, 9, a nonaqueous electrolyte composition, and an outer package member housing them. A porous insulating layer 20 containing electric insulating fiber is provided between the cathode 6 as well as the anode 7 and the separators 8, 9. The porous insulating layer 20 covers a whole cathode mixture layer of the cathode 6. The electric insulating fiber of the porous insulating layer 20 consists of cellulose fiber, aramid fiber, polyethylene terephthalate fiber or the like. The porous insulating layer contains an endothermic agent. A region is provided at an innermost and an outermost periphery parts of the battery element for exposed parts of collectors to oppose each other through the separators.
