The method involves supporting a crankshaft in rotating manner, on which piston carrying connecting rods are hinged. The piston is moved in cylinders that cover the combustion chamber formed by cylinder heads. A gas flow is exchange with the combustion chamber over gas exchange valve units. A device is provided for a valve controlled, inner exhaust gas recirculation. An outlet valve of a cylinder, which is in the expansion phase, is additionally held open during the expansion, till the outlet valve is held open for the actual exit time or opened at second time.
