PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable telephone set having operability that is improved by eliminating complicity in key entry, and to provide an input method therefor. SOLUTION: In a card type portable telephone set 10, a plurality of character column keys from the column of "ah" (Japanese syllabary: Kana) to the column of "wa" (Japanese syllabary: Kana) corresponding to an array, constituted of 10 rows and 5 columns, of Japanese syllabary that is similar to the conventional ten key are displayed on a display 3, an inverted cursor is moved to a desired character column key by operating a scroll button 2, and the character column key is determined by depressing the enter key 1. A plurality of character keys, corresponding to a plurality of characters arrayed on the determined character column key, are displayed on the display 3, the inverting cursor is moved to a desired character key by having the scroll button 2 operated, and a character corresponding to the desired character key is entered by depressing the enter key 1.
