<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for inspecting a printed matter which enable an improvement in the precision of inspection of the printed matter other than that of the first edition. <P>SOLUTION: The printed matter inspecting device 1 registers reference images 29 of the first edition and conditions 31 of its inspection in a storage part 5. Starting inspection of printed matter 21-n of an nth edition, the printed matter inspecting device 1 reads out the reference images 29 of the first edition and the conditions 31 of its inspection which are already registered. The device 1 sets conditions of inspection on the basis of the conditions 31. The device 1 performs a position correcting processing and a color correcting processing.
