<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an obstacle detection system and an obstacle detection method for positively detecting an obstacle even when a luminance edge which does not belong to the obstacle exists below the obstacle by extending an obstacle candidate area detected from image data, based on an aspect ratio of the obstacle candidate area to be detected. <P>SOLUTION: The image data imaged by an imaging device for imaging the periphery of a vehicle is acquired to detect the presence of the obstacle in the image. A detector specifies the obstacle candidate area in the image based on the image data acquired from the imaging device, and determines whether edges exist continuously below the specified obstacle candidate area. The obstacle candidate area is extended at the aspect ratio unique to the obstacle to be detected until determined that no edge exists, and a predetermined feature quantity is extracted from the extended obstacle candidate area to determine whether the obstacle exists. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
