<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method capable of manufacturing a heat insulating material also considering problems in treatment, moisture control and deodorization, while maintaining good insulating performance. <P>SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the heat insulating material includes a process for producing a vegetable carbonized material by carbonizing a vegetable material by indirectly heating it in the state where oxygen is essentially not newly supplied. This manufacturing method further preferably includes a process for adding and mixing 1-27 wt.% of an adhesive to the vegetable carbonized material, and pressurizing and compacting in a hot state or at the normal temperature.
